Why is the life of the drill significantly shortened when processing stainless steel? Do you need a special coating?
  1. Material property challenges
    Work hardening tendency: Stainless steel (e.g. 304, 316) hardens rapidly due to plastic deformation during the cutting process (surface hardness can reach 2-3 times the initial), resulting in severe wear of the drill edge.
    • High strength and toughness: Containing chromium, nickel and other elements makes stainless steel strong (tensile strength 500-1000MPa), ductile, high cutting resistance, and easy to collapse the drill bit.
    • Poor thermal conductivity: The thermal conductivity of stainless steel is only 1/3 of that of carbon steel, and the cutting heat is concentrated at the tip of the drill, and the temperature can reach more than 800 ° C, accelerating the oxidation and softening of the drill.
  2. Effect of processing conditions
    • Difficulty in chip removal: Stainless steel chips are highly viscous and easy to wrap around drill grooves, hindering coolant penetration and exacerbating friction and temperature rise.
    • Vibration and shock: Intermittent cutting (e.g. uneven drilling opening) causes the drill bit to withstand periodic stress and is prone to fatigue fracture.
